A Trusted Community Leader

Re-Elect
Nasreen Johnson standing in front of the new Fresno City College West Fresno Campus

Student Success Champion

Education attainment levels in our community are some of the lowest in the state. Employment, income, and the quality of life for families are impacted. I have worked to reduce barriers for students, keep tuition and fees low, and create opportunities for student success.

Advocate for Career Technical Education (CTE)

Our business community needs an educated workforce and community colleges provide critical technical education to new and returning students. I will work to expand hands-on training for students and develop partnerships to help students make a smooth transition from the classroom to the workforce.

Fiscally Responsible

The greatest responsibility for any public servant to be a good steward of taxpayer dollars. My strong ethics, MBA education, and business experience will continue to provide a valuable perspective to the board.

Dedicated to Equity-Centered Student Success
Nasreen worked to identify Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) as part of a structured method to review the district's success in attracting, retaining, and educating students. The Board now regularly reviews disaggregated data on the performance of the district and each college based on these KPIs.
Fiscally Responsible & Transparent
Nasreen works to ensure the institution's long-term fiscal health and stability through strategic spending and instituting a 17% district reserve to cushion the district and its employees from unexpected events.
Leading with Knowledge and Experience
Nasreen is one of two current board members who have completed the Excellence in Trusteeship Program, a 27-unit program offered by the Community College League of California. The program supports the accreditation requirement for continuing board development.
Advocating for Faculty & Staff
Nasreen advocated for significant wage increases for part-time faculty, full-time faculty, and staff. She was proud to offer health insurance to part-time faculty for the first time in the district's history. She also supported inviting and paying part-time faculty to attend professional development opportunities.
Values First Responders
Nasreen supported building the new First Responders Campus located in Southeast Fresno. In addition to supporting the needs of future first responders, she also advocates for local first responders through her role on the Fresno Fire Chief's Foundation Board.
Championing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA)
Nasreen supported over 30+ resolutions to improve diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility on campuses and across the district for students, staff, and faculty. It is important to have everyone feel welcomed and supported on campus.

MEET NASREEN MICHELLE JOHNSON

Combining Lived Experience and Education

Our community colleges are a gateway out of poverty. I am a first-generation college graduate, attending Fresno City College to earn my AA degree. My mom graduated with her AA degree just one semester after I did. She took night classes, one at a time, for almost two decades, showing me that education is essential. Many students in our community college system are like my mom and I – first-generation students or returning to school while working and raising families.

I returned to college as a single mother of two young children and recognized firsthand the additional ways that colleges can support students in their success. I was fortunate to earn my Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and an MBA only because I had access to reliable child care (not to mention a bunch of student loans). But it shouldn’t be so difficult for students to achieve their educational pursuits while raising a family.

Working in the agricultural, manufacturing, industrial, and non-profit industries, I have a strong pulse on the employment needs of our community. I am continually assessing the types of jobs available in the community and that the programs and classes offered by the district not only fit, but complement our ever-changing world.

In addition to the hundreds (sometimes thousands!) of pages of information I review each month of items that come before the board, I spend time researching topics to understand the different facets of an issue. I want to know how other districts and communities are handling these topics so we are positioned to provide the best educational experience for students. I look at each issue through a variety of lenses to see how it will impact students, staff, faculty, and the community.
